Boat capsizes in Lake victoria Killing 23 people
Two children
lost their lives after a passenger boat they were travelling in collided with a
fishing boat in lake Victoria between Kiwa and Remba Islands Homa Bay County.
The vessel, which was heading to Sori town
from Remba Island, and the smaller boat both capsized after the collision
on Wednesday, August 5, 2015.“The Accident occurred at about 2am when a huge vessel heading to Sori collided with another boat before hitting a huge rock,” Kevin Omondi, who is in the area, told Radio Jambo.
The two siblings, aged 4 and 2, were traveling with their mother to Kisumu.
A local official dismissed reports that the passenger boat had about 200 people on board, BBC reports.
The official said that boat was only carrying 23 people and 21 were rescued by fishermen who responded to the distress calls.
Remba Island is near the the Kenya-Uganda border and the residents, mostly fishermen, usually travel to nearby towns to shop for domestic goods.
It borders Migingo Island, which is at the centre of ownership row between Kenya and Uganda.
A 1926 colonial boundary placed Migingo and Remba islands in Kenya but Ugandan authorities have been claiming ownership of the former.
