Government warns probox operators from using them for public means

If you look around the country mostly the rural areas you will notice the main mode of transport is use of private vehicles I.e probox, Toyota sienta and any other station wagon vehicle with vast space and can accommodate a lot of people. The most commonly used vehicle among those I have mentioned is the Probox.
Well these probox operators using them for public transport means have been warned against that practise. John Muya, the National and Saftey Authority (NTSA) deputy director said the cars have been operating illegally as they are not registered in Saccos. The agency faces challenges since they have issued similar warnings in the past but the operators always ignore the directives issued.

The practice of these vehicles has been causing alarm as most of them are always overloaded beyond their carrying capacity. A few months ago a 3 probox cars were spotted ferrying 80 pupils to a school trip. This shocked the police who discovered the incident and three people were arrested over that.
Not only is the Government complaining about the faulty probox operators but also matatu operators complained that the probox operators continue transporting passengers despite flouting the regulations given and ignoring the serious risks they pose to their passengers and other road users.
Your concerns are very genuine because my authority only recognises matatus registered under saccos to engage in public transport. The Probox and Wish type of vehicles are therefore not allowed to carry passengers,” said Muya as quoted in the Star.
He was speaking during meeting with members of the Matatu Welfare Association in Kisii on Friday, September 11, 2015.
