Police Launch a Manhunt for Jogoo road bus robbers
Police have launched a manhunt across Nairobi to find the thugs that robbed commuters on a Jogoo road bus as they headed towards downtown.
The bus that was robbed belonged to the ‘Double M’ fleet of vehicles. At least 30 passengers fell victim to the robbery. The thugs then abandoned the passengers in an alley off of Jogoo road.
Police believe that the group of thugs fled the scene, escaping into the nearby Kiambiu slum, reports Nairobi News. The Kiambiu slums border the Eastleigh area of Nairobi. Charles Owino, the spokesman for the police, stated that the thugs were among the passengers when they sprang the robbery, drawing knives and a gun to overpower the passengers. They then made off with phones and valuables.
None of the passengers sustained serious injuries during the robbery.
Owino added that such incidents have been less frequent in recent weeks. The police spokesperson attributes the drop to increased police and matatu operator alertness.
The robbery is far from the first incident involving armed thugs stealing from passengers. Commuters on matatus are frequently targeted for petty theft and armed robbery.
A similar incident on Jogoo road, also involving a Double M bus occurred on Thursday, July 2, 2015. The robbery took place in a similar fashion with thugs disguising themselves as passengers. The robbery took place early in the morning.
