Woman sentenced to life imprisonment after deforming husband's face with acid.
A woman has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of trying to kill her husband twice.
Embu principal magistrate Robinson Oigara, on Tuesday, September 8, 2015, ruled that Vernicia Ruguru deserved a life sentence after prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that she committed the offence.
The court was told that the 36-year-old woman intentionally splashed acid on her husband Patrick Njue on July 16, 2012, in Kibugu village, Embu North.
“On the material day, Ruguru woke up and prepared their children for school. When she returned, she went on with her house chores. Ruguru later walked to their bedroom as Njue lay on the bed and splashed the acid on him,” the prosecution said. She then locked the door and fled. Njue was rescued by neighbours who took him to the hospital.
Ruguru then pursued her husband to the hospital after learning that her first attempt to kill him failed, the court heard.
Patrick Njue is said to have suffered serious pain and deformation from the acid attack.
Her defence that she splashed the acid on her husband after he tried to splash it on her during a quarrel was dismissed as a fabrication.
She was given 14 days to appeal.
