SAD! Teacher Commits Suicide After Missing September Salary
A teacher in Nyandarua county has allegedly committed suicide because he did not receive his September 2015 salary.
The primary school teacher – 38-year old Patrick Irungu shocked residents of Kiriogo village when he hanged himself in his house.
His father, a Mr Gathenya, said his son was very upset after he went to the bank hoping his account had been credited with the September salary but he did not find any money.
The late Irungu is among over 240,000 teachers across the country who are yet to receive their September salary following a five-week strike where teachers were demanding a 50-60% salary increment.
The teachers called off the strike on Saturday October 3, but said they would resume the industrial action in January 2016 should the government fail to award them the salary increment as directed by a court in June 2015.
It is believed stress caused by lack of money may have motivated Irungu to take his life.
“He looked very depressed and went to sleep early. The following morning, I tried calling him but he was not picking my calls and I got suspicious. I got to his house immediately only to find his body hanging,” Gathenya is quoted in The Standard.Nyandarua OCPD Morris Assila said investigations had commenced to establish why the teacher committed suicide.
