Shock as Baby With Brain Outside Skull Survives

A baby at Consolata Hospital Mathari, in Nyeri, has shocked with his unexpected recovery even after the mother abandoned him at the hospital one week after birth due to his physical abnormalities.

Baby Brian, diagnosed with encephalocele, had been born with parts of the brain protruding outside the skull, bilateral palate and a cleft lip which hampered his ability to suckle.

Expressing his shock, the hospital's Director, Boniface Mwangi, narrated how the little boy was admitted with the doctors giving him only six days to live.

“I was shocked when I saw the baby soon after we admitted him, I even asked a doctor how we will deal with the case, I almost lost hope on the infant survival chances,” Mwangi said.

The boy is said to have undergone several surgeries with his skull being broken down and reconstituted in an attempt to save his life.

Neurosurgeons involved in the surgeries expressed hope in Brian's recovery due to the continued improvement, three months after completing the first phase of surgeries.

Baby Brian is however expected to under go more corrective operations in order to reconstruct the head and the face.

Brian, who has now earned the name Mathari's Miracle Baby, has lived 21 months past the time doctors estimated.

The successful recovery of Brian comes a week after a 10-month-old baby in Bungoma, miraculously survived a horrific tragedy after it was shot in the chest by suspected hired killers.
