Passengers Narrowly Escaped Death After Matatu Rolls In Chuka
Four people have been seriously
injured after a matatu they were travelling in lost control and plunged into a
ditch in Chuka.
The 14-seater vehicle which was
heading to Meru from Nairobi rolled several times after the driver avoided
hitting a pedestrian on Sunday, July 19, 2015.
According to Daily Nation one
of the victims was was transferred to Aga Khan Hospital in serious condition
while the remaining three and six others with minor injuries were taken to
Chuka General Hospital.
The area resident told the paper
that there is often an increase in accidents whenever it rains as the road gets
slippery.
“The other day a fuel tanker rolled
here trying to avoid knocking a pedestrian but nothing has been done even after
we complained to our MP Muthomi Njuki,”
said Sammy Njagi, Kangoro Bodaboda Operators Association chairman.
They want the government to erect
speed bumps on the road as a way of reducing the incidents.
In 2014,
most of those who died in road accidents were pedestrians at 1,340 reported
deaths followed by 642 passengers, 391 motorcyclists and 268 drivers.
