4 tourists jailed after stripping off on a sacred mountain
Four tourists have been arraigned in a Malysian court over charges that
they stripped off on a sacred mountain, Mount Kinabalu in Malysia. A British
woman, Eleanor Hawkins, 23, Dutch national Dylan Snel, 23 and Canadian siblings
Lindsey, 23, and Danielle Peterson, 22 all admitted charges of “committing an
obscene act in the public”. Eleanor admitted causing disturbance and was
imprisoned for three days along with the other three. She said that she had
been “stupid and disrespectful.”
The group was blamed for a magnitude 5.9 earthquake after stripping on
the mountain, which is considered sacred.
Prosecutors said that the tourists along with six other people climbed to
the peak to enjoy sunrise on May 30, and challenged each other to take their
clothes off and pose for photographs. On 5th June, an earthquake struck near
the mountain killing 18 people and leaving hundreds homeless.
Hawkins was also fined 5,000 Malaysian ringgit (£860/$1,330) on Friday.
