Brave 10 year old boy rescues his sisters from a night fire
A brave
10-year-old boy on Friday rescued his two sisters in a night fire that killed
his grandfather and two other children at Kajulu village, Kisumu County.
In an act of
extreme courage, Ronald Ouma carried his two little sisters out of the blazing
house and almost lost his life as returned for two other siblings as the
grandfather burnt in the 11pm incident. The siblings had burnt by the time he
was back.
Mr Kennedy
Ong’alo, Ouma’s uncle said that they were six people in the house when the fire
broke out. Mr Ong’alo who narrated the rescue to the Nation, celebrated
his nephew’ daring act.
All the
children aged between two and five years had fallen asleep.
Their
grandfather, 52-year-old Paul Ong’alo had fallen asleep in the chair. His wife
said he came home drunk. He had spent the evening taking alcohol at a nearby
drinking den.
The Nation
could not speak to Ouma who was undergoing treatment at Jaramogi Teaching
and Referral hospital in Kisumu following minor burns he sustained during the
rescue mission.
According to
the uncle, Ouma, a Class Three pupil at Largeslum Academy, was awaken by the
heavy smoke.
At the time,
he was sleeping in his single room house that is barely 200 metres from his
father’s.
In the event
of scrambling for safety, Ouma rushed to open the door and carried his two
little siblings aged three and four years.
HELP HIS
GRANDFATHER
He took them
to a nearby homestead and left them at the doorstep as he dashed back to pick
his two other siblings and help the grandfather.
He found it
difficult opening the door which had locked itself.
“He said he
tried to push the door but it he did not succeed. He screamed and the villagers
came to assist him break the door,” Mr Ong’alo narrated to a Nation reporter
at the scene.
The cause of
the fire was not immediately established but police said investigations have
been launched.
“We don’t
want to rely on speculation for now because we are not sure whether the elderly
man attempted to commit suicide or it’s the work of arsonists,” Kisumu police
boss Musa Kongoli said in an interview.
However,
Mary Ong’alo, the wife of the deceased, linked the deaths to a land tussle
saying that her husband had earlier received threats to vacate the disputed
two-acre land.
Mrs Ong’alo
said that she had served supper to her husband.
“I left him
eating in the house and went for a funeral night vigil in a nearby village. I
was called 20 minutes later that my house was burning,” Mrs Ong’alo said.
Nothing was
salvaged from the house.
