Eight school girls arrested for planning to burn school dormitory in meru.
Eight
students of Gikumene Secondary School in Meru County have been arrested for
planning to burn a dormitory.
The students
were on Tuesday held at Meru police station as investigations over plans to set
the dormitory on fire continued.
The arrests
came after two students were seen on Sunday evening buying petrol at a filling
station at Gitimbine area in Meru County.
Meru OCPD
Sammy Koskey said one petrol station attendant called the principal to inquire
why the students were buying the petrol.
SET A
TRAP
“The
principal alerted the watchmen and they started searching where the petrol was
being hidden. They were forced to set a trap on Monday night to see who will
collect the petrol,” Mr Koskey said.
He added
that at around 10.30pm, when the lights were switched off, one of the watchmen
hid next to where the petrol was being hidden .
“At around
11.00pm one girl was seen heading to where the container was. When she noted
that someone was around she started screaming for help. We were immediately
notified by the principal and after a long conversations between the student
and the principal she was able to name others,” the OCPD added.
He added
that two students were in Form One while six others were in Form Two.
“We are
investigating the issue and I urge everyone to be conscious of such incidents
and report them immediately to the police to avoid loss of properties or even
lives,” he said.
Last month,
Katheri Boys high School and Nkuene in Meru County were closed indefinitely
after their dormitories were burnt down and properties worth thousands of
shillings destroyed.
Students
were suspected to have started the infernos.
