Mother Furious After Baby’s Penis Is Cut Off During Circumcision

A Ugandan woman has been left angry and traumatised after her six-month-old baby’s penis was cut off during a circumcision session that she says she didn’t even authorise.
Rosette Katushabe from Fort Portal town, Uganda told Daily Monitor that on September 2, 2015, she left her baby with a caretaker, only to come back and find him without a penis.

“I left my baby with a caretaker but when I came back, I found that his penis had been cut off reportedly during circumcision. The caretaker told me that the baby’s auntie came with a sheikh who circumcised him,” said the distraught woman.

The paper quoted a hospital report from Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital that indicated the “baby’s genitals were mutilated during a cultural circumcision”.
It also outlined that the “testis and scrotal structure were normal”.
Fort Portal Central Police Station boss Joshua Tusingwiire said that together with the Medical Superintendent at Fort Portal Regional Referral hospital Dr. Charles Olaro, they established that indeed the baby had lost his penis, but that there was a possibility for it to grow back.
The baby’s aunt and the sheikh in question have been arrested by the city’s police force.

“An offence has definitely been committed, and we will charge the suspects with main harm,” said Tusingwiire.

He added that a team of doctors from Spain will be jetting into Uganda to examine the baby further.
