Man Sets Himself on Fire Before Wedding
Wedding preparations turned into funeral arrangements after a 33-year-old teacher set himself on fire, a day before tying the knot at Kapkei village in Uasin Gishu County.
Bernard Chemweno, who teaches at Maraba Secondary School in Nandi County, was found dead at his partner's house after a loud explosion.
Area residents and his wife to be, Mercy Chebichii, were left in shock seeing Chemweno's remains lie on the floor of her house with a noose round his neck.
"He had wires tied around his neck. The explosion was so loud that its impact brought down the walls and ironsheets," said Silah Keitany, the landlord.
His elder brother, Oliver Chemweno, told the Standard that Bernard stayed behind on Thursday to finish up preparations for his wedding, as his family including the spouse attended his younger brother's dowry negotiations at Cheptai in Mt Elgon.
According to the landlord, he had never seen any signs showing that Bernard and Mercy had marital problems. Mr Keitany described Bernard as a happy man and one of few words.
The family could not understand why the deceased took his life, considering his wedding was forthcoming.
"We cannot think of any event or situation that led to the occurrence because he was well-off and close with his wife as far as we know," the deceased's elder brother said.
Police officers who responded to the scene, transported Bernard's body to the Moi Teaching and Referral mortuary.
