Facebook OPENS first office in Africa. see where and why.
Facebook, the world’s largest social networking site, has set up its
first headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa with an aim to expand to
Kenya and Nigeria markets.
Nicola
Mendelsohn, Facebook’s vice president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa,
has told Bloomberg that the company is keen to expand its
subscriber base from the current 120 million users by tapping into the
population of more than 1 billion people in the continent.
“This is
one of the places where our next billion users are coming from. It would be a
massive missed opportunity. Africa matters,” said Mendelsohn.
The new
office is keen on growing Facebook in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, the
official said.
Bloomberg reports that to win over consumers
concerned about the cost of data or who live in areas with lousy signals,
Facebook is partnering with mobile-phone companies to offer what it calls Internet.org, which gives
people free airtime when they access Facebook and a few dozen other selected
websites.
