Dozens Injured As Coach Roof Torn Off By Bridge
At least 28 people have been injured,
four seriously, after a coach had its roof sheared off as it crashed into a low
bridge.
The tour bus carrying 60 Spanish
students was understood to be en route from Bilbao to Amsterdam when the
accident happened in La Madeleine near Lille, France, early on Sunday morning.
It has been reported the driver was
following directions on the vehicle's satnav and apparently failed to see the
signs showing the maximum height of the tunnel.
He was taken into custody but tests
for alcohol and drugs were negative, according to local television reports.
The injured were taken to hospital
while the other passengers were taken to a sports centre ahead of returning to
Spain.
One of the students said most of the
passengers on board had been asleep when the coach hit the bridge.
"Suddenly the tunnel roof was
there," she said, gesturing above her head.
Witnesses said the most severely
injured had been sitting at the back of the bus, where the debris had been
dragged by the impact.
