Nigerians furiously react at first lady's 10million Naira wrist watch
Nigerians
online reacted angrily to their new First Lady wearing what they called a
10million Naira watch despite her husband raising campaign money from ordinary
voters.
Photos of
Aisha Buhari wearing a watch that Nigerian media identified as a Cartier
Baignoire Folle 18-Carat White Gold Diamond Ladies Watch that that retails at
$52,000 (Sh 5,026,320) have irked many online.
The photos
were first shared on Instagram by the First Lady’s photographer George Okoro
who said the main photo showing the timepiece was to form the first official
portrait of Mrs Buhari.
Aishat
Alubankudi, a supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari, has however denied the
claims stating that the real price of the wristwatch is only $129 (Sh12,469).
This did not
go down well with Nigerians on Twitter who started a hashtag #CartierGate
to express their views.
Stanley
Nwabia, @MrStanleyNwabia tweeted, “#CartierGate APC peeps are telling us
that Aisha Buhari’s watch was just a cheap replica of the original. This
narrative makes them happier?”
Others
speculated that the watch could have been a gift presented to the First Lady.
Adunni
Temitoppe, @sexyadunni tweeted, “Though that expensive watch might be a gift
but she could have rejected it since her husband is fighting these corrupt guys
#cartiergate.”
Olamide
Oladele, @Lammydel07 tweeted, “If only Aisha had known someone would zoom on
her 10.4m wristwatch, she would have worn Michael Kors jeje. Or Longines.
#Cartiergate.”
In March,
Muhammadu Buhari was elected as Nigeria’s new president after a campaign which
took a strong anti-corruption stance.
Buhari
underlined his humble credentials by raising money from ordinary voters and was
branded the ‘people’s president.’
